Managing Medications: Administering Insulin Injections
5:53
This episode of the Home Alone Alliance series on managing medications shows a family caregiver learning how to inject insulin, a medication used to treat diabetes. The video shows the family caregiver drawing up insulin into a syringe and then injecting the insulin into the family member’s abdomen. In this video, set in a hospital Emergency Department, a nurse demonstrates to a woman and her son how to inject insulin using a syringe. The patient has injured her wrist and cannot manage the injection herself, and her son will be doing it for her until she recovers. He is understandably anxious about this new responsibility. If you haven’t done this before, you may share these feelings. Even if you’re experienced, the video can be a good refresher. It may be reassuring to know that an estimated 7 million people in the United States require insulin injections, often more than once a day, so you are not alone.
