AARP Salutes Col. Frederick Lough - AARP

As a surgeon you are a performer. The historical name for an operating room is an operating theater, meaning that as the surgeon you are on stage. Col. Frederick Lough’s recent stage was a battlefield operating room—an amazing place where medical science meets action. Lough joined the US Army Medical Corps Reserves at 58 and was deployed twice to Afghanistan where he performed hundreds of surgeries in tents. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his service during his second tour, and is now conveying the lessons he has learned to military medical students at the Uniformed Services University at Walter Reed Medical Center.
